The Cheat Sheet! A.K.A. Uncle Richard Van Camp’s Storytelling Tips

One of our Dene laws is to share stories every day.

I am lucky to tour as an author and story-teller, and I find that when I’m marketed as a writer visiting a community, we can sometimes pack the room, but when I’m marketed as a storyteller, it’s standing room only. I think this is because we are all lonesome for stories; we are all lonesome for connection and community. It’s stories that unite us and remind us of our place in the world as brothers and sisters, and it’s an honour to be known as a great storyteller.

I wanted to sit down and share a few tips on how anyone can become a great storyteller. For those who are nervous as a public speaker, there’s an old storyteller’s trick where you bring a lot of props, so this way you can hide behind them for a bit before the spirit of the stories you wish to share gets everyone in the room sharing.

There’s also another great technique where you get everyone in the room to introduce themselves; ask them why they’ve come and, chances are, your visitors will get going on their own stories, and that’ll spark the room. Really, it’s just great practice as a visitor, a guest, and a host to always have a story ready.

Everyone loves a great ghost story and a sweet love story, and I’ll share a couple more of these here! And everyone loves hearing about how someone beat the unbeatable. Remember Rocky? What’s your story of triumph, either from your own life, your family, or your culture? Start writing it, and speaking it, and practicing it. I bet you can amaze someone if you share it.

And I’ll help you get started with my tips provided here. I hope my pointers help you out. Some I’ve already shared, but repetition is key with learning and storytelling.
